Well then in that case I'm about to make you real happy.

Imagine had Ronaldo never come along….could you imagine how badly Barcelona would’ve dominated Spanish football let alone Real Madrid? Forget the two trebles they already have; they could have had 5 maybe or at least 5 more doubles.

There's no arguing that since 2009 this has predominantly been Barcelona’s era. I'm a Madrid fan and I can admit that. However thanks to Ronaldo he has saved Madrid from utter humiliation.

This has been the best Barcelona side in probably the history of the club, largely due to Guardiola’s instilled philosophy that to this day is still somewhat everpresent. It's also doesn't take a genius to figure out that Messi has been surrounded by a much better team whose members gel well together and have amazing chemistry, again due to Guardiola.

Remember what Messi was doing the season before Guardiola came along?

This. In third place. And you may argue that Ronaldo wasn't even at Madrid when this occurred….but you know where he was instead? On his way to scoring in a champions league final to win it, after knocking out Barcelona in the semi-final.

Yes, if you're talking about direct goals in a cup final against Barca, then no he doesn't have a bag-load of those. Who does? Ronaldo is a legend, he's won 3 balon d’ors, 2 of which were at Madrid….along with the 364+ goals he's scored for Madrid alone, he has done far more than was expected from him, and the word “disappoint” shouldn't even be uttered in the same sentence as his name.

Post-script. I've compiled a list of literally 20 big games in which Ronaldo has scored, just to prove to you he's a big game player.

1) Scored in the FA Cup Final of 2004 to win Manchester United the FA Cup...and he was barely 19

2) Scored a goal in the semi-finals against Holland that was crucial to sending Portugal to the final of the 2004 Euro

3) Scored a goal in the League Cup final to win Manchester United the League Cup in 2006

4) Scored the winning penalty in the 2006 World Cup in the quarter finals against England to send Portugal to the semi-finals

5) Scored in the final of the CHAMPIONS LEAGUE in 2008 to win Manchester United their third Champions League ever

6) Scored one of the penalties in the shootout of the League Cup final in 2009 against Tottenham to win Manchester another league cup

7) Scored a 41-YARD free kick against Arsenal in the champions league to knock out them out in 2009

8) Scored the only goal in extra time in the 2011 Copa Del Rey final against Barca to win the Cup for Madrid

9) Scored that goal against Barca in camp nou in the league to win Madrid the liga title in 2012

10) Scored 2 goals against Bayern Munich in the semi-finals in the champions league of 2012 to send the game into extra time

11) Scored 2 beautiful goals against Holland in the group stage of the Euros of 2012 to make sure Portugal go out of the group stage

12) Scored that beast goal where he flicked it over Pique against Barca to win Madrid the Super cup (also scored in the previous leg too)

13) Scored both goals in the first clasico of the league of 2012-2013 to tie the game after Messi's 2 goals

14) Scored 2 goals at the camp nou to knock out Barca of the Copa Del Rey in 2013

15) Scored 2 goals against Bayern at the Allianz Arena (one of which was an under-the wall Free kick) to send Madrid to the final in 2014

16) Scored in the final of the Champions League in 2014 to win it

17) Scored both goals against Sevilla to win the Uefa Super Cup

18) Scored in the first clasico in the league of 2014-2015

19) Scored again in the 2nd clasico of that season at camp nou

20) Hattrick against Wolfsburg

Bonus: scored that beautiful hattrick against Sweden to send Portugal to the World Cup, like a true captain.

-UCL top scorer 5 times.
-The first player to score more than 50 goals in 6 consecutive years in the world.
-Top European scorer.
-The player with the most hat-tricks in La liga's history.
-And many great numbers.

But if you are going to compare silverware, than surely Messi will win.

But Messi wasn't the only one playing at Barcelona. In the golden era of Barca, Real Madrid was chasing a manager after the other and selling and buying players of all kinds. And that affected the team's performance as it has affected Ronaldo's silverware amount.

And comparing the most decisive goals? And you couldn't find other than the Copa Del Rey goal?

Have you seen this year's UCL? Have you watched his hat-trick against Wolfsburg? I hope you found that one decisive. And what about scoring in every Clasico? Isn't that decisive for winning La Liga? Even if in the end they didn't win.

And even that he didn't score a single goal againt Atletico in the final, his work rate was great. He defended and he was one of the reasons Atleti. couldn't get into Marcelo's side of the field. But you people just want goals.

And have you watched the penalty that won Real Madrid the trophy? Do you know how much focus and nerves this shot needs? Of course he did it for the glory too, but if he hadn't been up for it he wouldn't have taken it. And it proved to be a bit decisive don't you think?

Look, I know you might be new to all of this, but you have to see, not just watch what happens during a game.

And stop comparing for fuck sake and enjoy this game.

Short answer : NO !

One thing people need to realize is that Real Madrid are nowhere near what they look like in paper, for multiple reasons, the most important of which are :

1- Inconsistency of top players : Unlike Xavi, Iniesta, and now Suarez, Real Madrid big names have always been very inconsistent. That goes for Kaka, Ozil, Di Maria, Benzema, James and Bale until this season. The only name up front who delivers day in and day out under all circumstances is Ronaldo. He has been carrying Real’s attack for years now (Examples later).

2- Long-term injuries : Let’s just say that big injuries costed the team the last two La Liga. Modric’s injury in 2014/15 season costed him 22 games of La Liga, and the team couldn’t cover his absence, unsurprisingly, and went on a steep decline. Last season, Bale was in a great form, much better than the previous season, but injury put him away for 15 La Liga matches. In these two seasons, the team lost La Liga by 2 pointsand 1 point respectively. Do I need to explain more ?

3- Constant change : Especially with managers : One bad season and you’re out. During Ronaldo’s time at Real Madrid, the team had 5 different managers. Unlike Barcelona, changing the manager means changing the formation and the style of play. Ronaldo has also played alongside 5 different playmakers : Kaka, Ozil, Di Maria, James and Modric. Messi, in comparison, always had Iniesta behind him. It’s well known that the more stable the team, the better they can perform.

For Ronaldo to score more goals than he played matches (scoring 50+ goals for 6 consecutive seasons in the process), and to be UCL top goalscorer for 5 seasons and become the competition’s all time goalscorer despite all these circumstances is a remarkableachievement to say the least. Over his 7 seasons at Real, Ronaldo’s goal+assist/ratio in La Liga and UCL is nearly equal to Messi’s in the same period (1.39 v 1.41), and he clearly had the worse circumstances.

That’s insane !

There are endless examples of Ronaldo saving the team even when, on paper, they shouldn’t be having any problems. There is no chance of me remembering all of them of course, so I will just list “the top 5″ I can remember :

1- Against Wolfsburg in 2015/2016 (UCL R16, 2nd leg) : Real Madrid is two goals behind a team they should be beating with ease. Bale and Benzema were invisible all match, and the team as a whole had an average match. Ronaldo scored all three goals to take Real through, and it wasn’t just the goals. Ronaldo showed more urgency and desire than any other player on the pitch, he was the real leader of the team that night.

2- Against Roma in 2015/2016 (UCL R16) : Benzema only played one of the legs (no goals or assists), and Bale only played 30 minutes out of 180. In the 1st leg, the team had a terrible first half, registering no shots on target for the first time since 2011 (Against Barcelona). Their second shot on target was a goal by Ronaldo. In the second leg, the team looked very vulnerable, until Ronaldo scored. He then assisted the team’s second and last goal. The aggregate result was 4–0.

3- Against Schalke in 2014/2015 (UCL R16, 2nd leg) : The team won 5–4 on aggregate, with Ronaldo scoring 3 and assisting 1 out of the 5goals. His two goals in the second leg, which the team ended up losing, were both desperately-needed equalizers.

4- Against Atletico in 2014/2015 (UCL QF, 2nd leg) :Let’s just say that Atletico managed to keep Real in check until Ronaldo made a great run on the right flank and gave Javier Hernandez the ball on a silver plate. The aggregate result was 1–0.

5- Against Celta Vigo (CDR) : This might be the worst of all. The team lost the 1st leg 2–1, with Ronaldo, of course, scoring the only goal. In the 2nd leg, the result read 4–0. Guess who scored the first three goals ? Ronaldo. He also assisted the 4th.

Did you see Ronaldo’s famous back-heel against Vallecano ?

The team won that match 1–0.

These examples show how Ronaldo has been carrying the team on his back, and trust me, there are many others.

The table below might show how dependent Real Madrid are on Ronaldo compared to Barcelona on Messi. It shows the total goals+assists Messi and Ronaldo scored and how much they make of the total goals+assists by the attacking trio, as well as the team’s total goals in the KO stages of UCL in the last 4 seasons.

Note : Attacking trio goals are counted separately and then summed. If Ronaldo makes an assist for Bale, that goal adds 2 to the attacking trio sum, not 1.

As you can see, Messi’s highest contribution in terms of the ratio between his goals+assists to the team’s total came in 2012/13 with 0.43, which is lower than Ronaldo’s lowest contribution of 0.45. In 2014/15, Ronaldo’s contribution goes monstrously high with 0.88. You can also see how much the other two in the attacking trio helps Ronaldo compared to Messi. The Argentine fraction of the trio’s total was a third or less in 3 out of 4 seasons, and had a 1/3 ratio of the total. Ronaldo, on the other hand, contribute to half or more in 3 out of 4 seasons, and had a ratio of about 3/5 of the total.

I don’t think much explanation needs to be done here.

Most of the time, it’s the team letting CR7 down, not vice versa. This can be seen in the fact that out of the 5 teams who knocked Real out in UCL during Ronaldo’s time, the Portuguese scored against (Scoring 2 in 2 occasions). Messi, in comparison, didn’t score any goal against the teams that knocked out Barcelona since 2009.

As for being a big game player, I will just leave these stats here :

Ronaldo is the all-time top goalscorer of UCL semi-final with 10 goals, of which came with Real Madrid. In comparison, Messi has 4.

Ronaldo is the all-time top goalscorer of UCL quarter-final with 14 goals, most of which came with Real.

Ronaldo is the all-time top goalscorer of UCL knockout stages with 44 goals, most of which coming with Real.

Ronaldo is El Clasico 3rd all-time top goalscorer with 16 in seven seasons only.

In 2012, Ronaldo scored in 6 consecutive Clasicos (7 goals), which is a still-standing record.

With Real Madrid, Ronaldo has 4 goals in 4matches against Bayern (all in semi-final), and 5goals in 4 matches against Juventus.

Is that enough ?

Ronaldo is a huge success at Real Madrid. He was exactly what Real wanted. Even Messi wouldn’t be as successful as him in his role at Real and I don’t think any other footballer would ever be able to do so.

First, let’s get this straight: Ronaldo cannot be compared to Messi on sporting level. No matter how loud his fans scream or how much the English media BS that playing in “a cold night at Stoke” is more impressive than doing so on a hot afternoon at Bilbao or a snowy day in Kiev, it’s Messi who

Won and is winning his club an unprecedented number of silverwares

Is being compared to all-time greats such as Pele and Maradona by people who played and understood the sport (not to mention those people themselves)

Performed dribbles and created passes, assists and goals that we’ll be watching for years to come (it’s not a coincidence that Messi’s fans watch videos while Ronaldo’s fans are reading stats.)

However, Ronaldo, besides being the second best player on the planet, is also very adept at personal brand building. He is the most followed sport star on social media. As of May 2016, his Facebook page has 111M likes while the page of Real Madrid has about 90M. This is a huge deal because we live in the era of personal worship when people circulating photos of their own butts on the Internet are considered role models. Just look at other answers on this question where his fans basically argue that being the top goalscorer in a league is more important than winning the league itself.

And this is of utmost important to Real Madrid, or at least its president who has always prioritized commercial successes over sporting ones. Ronaldo’s personal brand brings fans who bring the club money and make it the richest one in the world. The reason Real fought hard to keep him is that if Ronaldo moved, a significant number of self-proclaimed Real’s fans who actually are his fans would switch team in a heartbeat.

This is why Real catered to Ronaldo’s successes rather than vice versa. Messi is asked to change his play to suit the team. Real changes its play to suit Ronaldo. The more goals he scores, meaningful or not, the more fans he has and the more shirts Real sells. As such, Real is completely content with the fact that Ronaldo has won more Ballon D’or than the club has La Liga titles since he joined.

Moreover, I don’t think any other football star has the same prefect blend of talent, look and personality to build such a powerful brand as Ronaldo’s. So, capturing Ronaldo is the best maneuver Real did in decades, dwarfing even Zidane’s transfer. Credits go to Perez for this unprecedented success.

Probably because you have bias against Cristiano Ronaldo.

He has carried Real Madrid to the best he could. The hattrick against Wolfsburg in 2015/16 UCL quarters is the newest example to that. His record setting UCL goal scoring in decima season is another pointer to how effective he has been for Real Madrid.

Scoring 70+ UCL goals (for Real Madrid) and becoming Club’s top scorers , that too by overtaking absolute legends like Di stefano, Raul, Hugo sanchez, Puskas etc is a feat that cant be ignored. Scoring 50+ goals for 6th consecutive season is another feat. WIth any amount of bias, no one could say he has underachieved. Most of the time, Messi had better team mates than him who operated at the highest level when it mattered.

As a player CR is not as talented as Messi, but as a player Both has very similar impact to their teams.

Well, truthfully he hasn't always delivered during big moments but he has though, such as the last years El Clasico where he scored a last minute header. It just happened recently though, but he really did last wednesday when Real faced Bayern. Neuer seemed unstoppable that night but he scored the only two goals. It's probably off the topic but he has in the Euro 2016 semis and really for his country in the Euro’s except the finals, which he didnt fully play. And really in Real Madrid, Ramos is always there to step up when needed too. In Barca the only player who is there to step up is Messi if you look at it. In all those big games, no one else but him. Although in the PSG 6–1, Neymar really stole the show.

But truly, Ronaldo is more of a success in Real than United, he has 279 goals in 260 apps! That is unbelievable. Messi is pure talent from God but Ronaldo is a self built machine with no flaws. Almost unstoppable. He's spent less time in Real Madrid but has a goal to game ratio double Messi’s or anyone on this planet. He has the best goal to game atio ever in any league in the whole of Europe. He’s unreal. Don't say disappointment next to his or Messi’s name

Scored a multitude of goals at a very impressive rate.
Made crucial assists even though he is tagged as merely a goal scorer.
Won three Ballon d’Or/ Golden Shoe, playing for Real Madrid.
Won multiple titles, both major trophies as well as domestic cups including three Champions league titles in four years. Ronaldo was the top scorer in each of these campaigns.

Because of his genius on the pitch and his friendly persona off the pitch, Ronaldo is followed by millions of people and is the most popular athlete on social media. Real Madrid has benefited from his influencer status and have acquired a greater fan base, leading to more revenue in terms of increased membership, ticket revenue and jersey sales. Far from being a disappointment, I would say he has been the best signing for Real Madrid.

No no no no no no no! (7 times no, 7 is the jersey number of Ronaldo)

You cannot say that. Never.

If we see at individual level, their performance at their respective clubs, Ronaldo surpasses Messi easily. Why i am saying this?

Cristiano Ronaldo have scored 261 goals for Real Madrid in just 237 appearances whereas Messi have scored only 314 goals in 350 appearances for Barcelona.

Cristiano Ronaldo holds the record for most number of goals in a single campaign of UEFA Champions league with 17 goals.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the all-time scorer of UEFA Champions League with 93 goals.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the only player in the world to receive 4 European Golden shoes.

Cristiano Ronaldo has scored most number hat-tricks in La-Liga.

Cristiano Ronaldo was the first player to score against every team their is in La-Liga in a single season.

Cristiano Ronaldo has scored more than 30 goals for the last six consecutive seasons for Real Madrid.

Cristiano Ronaldo holds the record for scoring in six consecutives El-Classicos'.

Cristiano Ronaldo helped Real Madrid to break the Barcelona's dominance in Spanish league.

FACT

Cristiano Ronaldo has given everything to Real Madrid which he can but If you think, not winning many domestic league titles makes you a failure then i feel sorry for you.

Peace!
