The Super Eagles of Nigeria dropped nine places in the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola world rankings released on Thursday despite the team’s improved form.
The latest rankings, which was published on FIFA’s official website, sees the Eagles assume 50th position in the world and 8th in Africa.
Having leaped from 44th to 41st spot in the rankings last month, a similar or greater leap was expected for the Nigerian team as they recently drew 1-1 at Algeria in a World Cup qualifier and defeated two-time World Cup winners, Argentina 4-2 in an international friendly.
But while Argentina stayed put on 4th position as the top five teams remained unchanged and Algeria leaping three places, the Eagles are now behind Senegal (23), Tunisia (27), Egypt (31), DR Congo (36), Morocco (40), Burkina Faso (44) and Cameroon (45) in the continent.
Burkina Faso didn’t qualify for the World Cup but moved up 11 places to become sixth in Africa, while Senegal rose to 23rd – their highest-ever position on the global ladder – on the back of securing a first World Cup place since 2002.
The Teranga Lions are are now the highest-ranked African nation.
Meanwhile, in the top 10 in the world, Germany are number one, Brazil are number two, Portugal are in third position, Argentina are fourth and Belgium fifth.
Spain moved up to sixth, Poland are now seventh. Switzerland moved up to eight while France and Chile complete the top ten in ninth and 10th respectively.
The next FIFA world ranking will be published on 21 December 2017.
